Riding the Silver Trail

Sarah on "Apache", Bob on "Lucky" and Rita on "Styx" riding the Silver/Orange Trail at the LBJ National Grasslands on Sunday, February 22, 2009. I was riding "Ranger". It's called the "Silver" Trail on the map, but it's marked with orange paint, I guess because the silver color was not very visible. We rode a 12-mile loop. It was our first time on this part of the Trail. We found one cache, and it was in the same Pine Forest where we were parked. There were three turkeys in these pines, too; a tom and two hens. They were tame, it seems, because they kept trying to come up to us, even though we chased them away many times. They were making our horses FREAK, and Lucky broke his lead rope. We finally managed to get our horses saddled and we rode off, but the turkeys followed us a little ways at first! Then they gave up. I was worried the whole ride that we would see more, scary (to my horse) wildlife, and that I'd get dumped, but the rest of the day was relatively calm. For sure it was a much warmer day than the day before! All-in-all, three glorious days of riding!!

Loren's 1st time riding at Big Mineral

Sarah on Ranger and Loren on Lucky watering the horses at the end of our three-hour ride. It was a VERY cold, VERY windy day, but a brilliant sun with zero clouds, and sandy horse trails that led us through dense timbers shot with plenty of cedar trees, kept us pretty comfortable. We found all five of the caches that we went looking for, even one that had Loren climbing like a monkey in a tree!
The cold weather had us dressing like bandits. This is Sarah and her trusty steed, Ranger.

Dalina's 1st time at The Farm

Loren on Lucky and Dalina on Apache, riding across the dam at Felderhoff's. The sun was getting very low and we were just getting started! We had a good ride and got back after dark. Friday, February 20, 2009.
